Your perception of yourself matters because it dictates your actions and ultimately it is what you project onto the outside world. Think about social media, when a person is feeling good about themselves they post their picture. Similarly, think about what makes one salesperson more dynamic than another. It is his or her perception of themselves that ignites their confidence. If they believe in themselves and their abilities, they will be positive and happy and speak with passion and flair which will ultimately win them the client.
How do you change your perception of yourself?
- By letting go of your past and people’s preconceived ideas of who you are, which eventually became your own. I remember so vividly getting my school report so many years ago, I used to dread it but at the same time it became so predictable. My teachers comments would read, “Trisha has worked hard this year and has done well, however there is always room for improvement”. Their intentions may have been good. I however had heard it so often that I actually started to believe that I was never good enough and I had to be and do more. As an adult I eventually started thinking of myself as Jack of All Trades and Master of Nothing.
- Forget about what was said that you believed to be true about yourself. It can only keep affecting you if you choose to let it. Reflect on what you have achieved, where your strengths lie and how you can use it in other aspects of your life.
- Start appreciating and embracing your value, your perception of yourself truly matters.
What will happen when you start to change your perception of yourself?
Once you make that mind shift and start perceiving yourself in a positive whole new light, you will start making small changes in your life which will lead to bigger ones thereafter.
Whatever you perceive yourself to be; you are projecting on the world. The world will treat you according to your own perception.
It will start to cause a positive ripple effect on those around you.
I will never forget this particular moment. One day I was walking on the promenade, enjoying the ocean view feeling particularly good about myself at that moment. I was also listening to my favourite music which automatically lights me up and puts a spring in my step. As I’m walking along I am smiling and in my element. All of sudden it dawned on me that people were smiling back at me as I passed them by. Instantaneously it made me feel even happier.
