Stress has adverse effects on both our mental and physical health. It often builds up over time when you are exposed to a situation over and over again that you feel you have no control over. This is when frustration and anger or nervousness take hold of you and starts to become your reality.
We are living in very tough times, politically, economically and socially. So much is changing so quickly and often we aren’t always able to deal with all that is expected of us. It is normal to feel the pressure.
Often you have no way of processing and dealing with it so you suppress it. You believe that you can handle it, that you have the situation under control. You don’t want to burden or scare your loved ones. You don’t want to be perceived as incapable or worse a failure.
The challenge is that the longer you suppress these negative emotions the more intensely it consumes you over time. Emotionally it leaves you in a state of anxiety, frustration and causes outbursts of anger. Or it causes you to feel depressed and brings about panic attacks.
Physically it causes tension headaches, upset stomach, high blood pressure, chest pain, and problems with sex and sleep. In some cases, you are possibly forced or inclined to take pills or alcohol to take the edge off or just be able to switch off from your reality.
The one thing you were trying to avoid starts to happen. It starts to affect your relationships with those around you.
It’s never too late to take control of your situation and choices. Seeking help from someone you can trust is the first step. Sharing your burdens will make you feel less alone. Make time for exercising, healthy meals, meditation and fun.
It may not take your stress away immediately, but it will alleviate it and ensure a longer life!
