Understanding Stress and Anxiety, what it is, and the affect it has on your life, will give you the upper hand over these crippling emotions. Knowledge is power and when you understand what stress and anxiety is, you are more capable of being in control of it’s affects in you life.

Anxiety is the feeling of fear, worry or unease often triggered by feelings of the unknown or when you find yourself in situations where you feel you have no control over. It’s the constant apprehension of what’s to come.

People may experience anxiety when going for an interview, starting a new job, writing exams or when giving a speech. It is normal to experience some kind of anxiety when participating in these activities. However if you are avoiding these activities, or if your anxieties are interfering with your life, your personal growth and well-being then this is where I can assist you.

Now stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension in reaction to situations or thoughts that leave you feeling anxious, frustrated, angry or nervous. Stress is your body’s reaction to a challenge or demand. It is often triggered when we experience something new or unexpected, when we feel we have little control over a situation or when it threatens our sense of self.

How can I tell if I am stressed?

  • Do you find yourself becoming increasingly agitated, frustrated and moody. Are you snapping at your loved ones or co-workers for anything and everything. Do you feel like people are just not understanding you or doing what you need.
  • Are you feeling overwhelmed, like you want to take control but you are failing to do so. Does this leave you feeling even more frustrated and in despair
  • Are you feeling bad about yourself (low self-esteem). When you are surrounded by people are you still feeling withdrawn and lonely.
  • Are you starting to avoid others
  • Do you feel like your mind will just not switch off and you can’t seem to relax
  • Are you consistently lacking energy and are always tired

Some stress can be good. It can be a challenge that keeps us alert, motivated and ready to avoid danger. But too much of stress can have adverse effects or your mental and physical health.

When is it considered unhealthy stress?

When it starts affecting you physically causing tension headaches, upset stomach, high blood pressure, chest pain and problems with sex and sleep.

Emotionally it leaves you in a state of anxiety, frustration and causes outbursts of anger. Or it causes you to feel depressed and brings about panic attacks. When it starts also affecting your family life and your relationship with others.

However what makes stress more dangerous is how you choose to respond to it. For most people they turn to alcohol or drugs, “to take the edge off”. Or they choose to gamble or spend too much on risky activities that may initially create a feeling of euphoria but then leave them worse off than they were before. Others may turn to food and overeat. All these choices will lead to more problems.
