I did it! I am typing out this blog from my beautiful office. The offices of True North Life Coaching. It is everything I had envisioned it to be and a little more. Trisha you are living your purpose.
At the stroke of midnight 2020, I made the decision to change my life. In addition to focusing on my family, I would also focus on living my purpose in a career that I am passionate about. For the longest time, I believed that I could never do both. I have since come to realise through my life coaching that it is possible to focus on more than one thing and be completely successful.
Past beliefs can be limiting in achieving your purpose
I grew up in a traditional home with traditional values. So when I chose to become a partner and parent, my whole focus fell on becoming a great wife and mom, like the generations before me. In choosing this my life started to only revolve around them and their needs. My own sense of purpose and identity as a fearless, independent, go-getting woman had begun to slowly disappear into the background.
This happens to all of us, men and women alike. The moment we have a partner or a family, we lose a little of ourselves as every day passes. We eventually become a version of what is expected of us, or should I say what we BELIEVE is expected of us. (Our beliefs is a big one. I will get to it in my next blog).
The result of losing your purpose
After a period of time we fall into a rhythm of comfort until one day we wake up and realise we actually don’t recognise ourselves anymore. Nor do we like where we are in our life. We feel lost, stuck and frustrated with ourselves and those around us. However, we are paralysed to do anything about it due to our feelings of fear and guilt.
Based on our life experiences we make estimates of what we can and can’t do. It is also a result of what we have paid attention to and focused on. However, what we fail to realise is that at any moment we can choose to change the course of our lives and find our life’s purpose.
A Relatable Example
I was watching the brilliant show The Queens Gambit on Netflix recently. The synopsis reads as follows, “The Queen’s Gambit follows the life of an orphan chess prodigy, Beth Harmon, during her quest to become the world’s greatest chess player while struggling with emotional trauma and drug and alcohol dependency”.
Beth was at the top of her game, her life had a purpose. She worked so hard and devoted so much time and energy to achieving her goal but when she was about to realise it, she spiraled. Plagued by the belief that she was to become like her mother, who had committed suicide, she began to self-sabotage. Fortunately, she was made to see that she can forge her own path and become the woman she was meant to be.
We are only limited by the thoughts we have and what we believe to be true about our capabilities and our life situation.
Start living your purpose
People are not only defined by or bound to the roles that once served them. Start taking positive action in discovering your strengths and what you wish to achieve in your life. Learn to respect yourself. You will thereafter find your own purpose and happiness within as you start to believe in yourself and your value. In turn, people around you will also begin to see your value and give you the respect you deserve. It’s worked for me!
Starting today and as we enter this New Year:
- Find your purpose by thinking about what makes you happy like a career change, a hobby, writing more, or volunteering.
- Make the choice to leave the past behind for it is who you were, not are.
- Make a conscious decision to make a change toward the life you want to have.
- Set your goals as if you have already achieved them. They must be realistic, tangible goals with a deadline.
- Write them out daily so they are at the forefront of your mind.
- Make time to achieve your goals by getting rid of the activities in your life that don’t add value. Those that serve no purpose. Time wasters!
- Set out to achieve your goals.
- Never give up or give in! Don’t expect instant results just keep focusing only on your outcome and take it one day at a time.
- Lastly, enjoy every minute of your journey to achieving it. Stay positive and celebrate the little victories.
