We live in a world where knowledge is power and where information is at our fingertips and yet we still fall trap to the same thoughts and beliefs as that of previous generations. Finding your inner power is the first step towards breaking the shackles of that which limits you in your potential and your possibilities.
My helper is 35 years old and has been with me for 6 years. After watching me study towards becoming a Life Coach, she decided that she too wants more out of her life. She wants to become a Social worker and has decided to finish her matric. Charity left school at the age of 17 because she got pregnant and was thrust into the world of motherhood. She had to find a job, any job, so as to provide for her children as a single mother. This isn’t an unfamiliar story. There are so many others out there who share the same experiences. Despite her family’s disapproval of her choice to study, as they believe she is too old now, she is determined to be a success. She has found her inner power.
What is inner power?
For me inner power is having a strong sense of self-belief in yourself and your capabilities. This inner self-belief doesn’t depend on the actions or thoughts of others nor does it depend on circumstances. You do not fear failure for you regard it as an opportunity to grow and learn. To have the ability to consistently change yourself, to better yourself. You are confident and self-assured in the knowledge that you can overcome any obstacle. It is the innate feeling that you can achieve anything you set your mind to with your end goal in mind. Self-belief and confidence in knowing your value is imperative to finding your inner power.
What hinders you from achieving or finding your Inner Power?
Quite frankly when you put your fate in the hands of others. As humans we constantly look for affirmations from others. We want to fit in. We make ourselves vulnerable by wondering what their perception of us is and it very much affects our choices in life. The moment you let someone else’s thoughts and actions influence you negatively or make you feel bad about who you are and what you are capable of, is when you lose your inner power. As long as you have a victim mentality life will happen to you, you are giving your power away. Take responsibility! People with victim mentality feel as though bad things keep happening and the world is against them. Even though there might be things you can do to help fix the situation, you don’t take responsibility for anything and feel as though everything is out of your control.
How can you achieve Inner Power?
Stop, reflect and be determined in your quest to gain your power back and take control of YOUR life.
Stop
Press the pause button for a moment so that you can take stock of where you are in your life right now. Are you happy? Do you feel a sense of inner peace? Or, do you feel like you are on a hamster wheel? Acknowledge your current state of mind and the feelings associated.
Reflect
On your journey to this point. The choices you made and where it has led you. Allow yourself to think about how things could be better or different. What would need to change? As Einstein says, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different outcome”. Being open to change is crucial to development and growth. Lastly, get clarity on what it is you desire for your life.
Be Determined
Change is never easy, if it was everyone would do it. The biggest lesson I have learnt in gaining my inner power is that determination and persistence is key. So once you make the commitment to change then do what is necessary to take your life in the direction you desire.
In Summary
No matter what age or what you have been through, it is never too late to gain inner power. By embarking on this journey you discover so much about who you are. You gain self-respect and belief that you are enough. You make choices for the betterment of you. Ultimately when you feel happy within you, you make others happy around you.
